Why a certificate expires
An emergency response or CPR certificate is usually valid for one year. There is a good reason for that: skills such as CPR and operating an AED fade if you do not maintain them. Guidelines change too. In practice, an expired certificate means you no longer count as a qualified responder.
The annual refresher
With a short refresher course each year you brush up your knowledge and your certificate stays valid. A refresher often takes only half a day and consists mainly of practice: you sharpen up the key actions again and learn the latest insights.
